also: cells of Claudius. These cells are found in the organ of Corti where they are located above rows of Boettcher's cells. Claudius' cells are considered supporting cells for the auditory hair cells in the organ of Corti. They play a role in sealing off endolymphatic spaces (Galic and Giebel, 1989). These cells contain a variety of aquaporin water channels and appear to be involved in ion transport (Minami et al, 1998; Sakaguchi et al, 1998; Takumi et al, 1998; Miyabe et al, 2002). Michel et al (2001) have reported that the cells express the VEGF receptor flk-1 (KDR).
