Name (also synantoglial cells) proposed for a glial cell type with the appearance of astrocytes and the antigenic phenotype of OPCs [oligodendrocyte progenitor cells], a designation that is used also to refer to these cells (Butt et al, 2002). These cells possess a small cell body and thin radiating processes. Synantocytes are distributed in both gray and white matter, where they represent 5-10 % of total brain cells and show high proliferative capacity within the adult brain (Guo et al, 2010; Dawson et al, 2003).
