mesenspheres

This term refers to non-adherent multicellular cell aggregates of mesenchymal stem cells that were identified using expression of the stem cell marker nestin (Méndez-Ferrer et al, 2010) (see also: sphere forming assay). These cells constitute an essential hematopoietic stem cell niche component and can self-renew and expand in serial transplantations and preserve their multilineage potential in suspension cultures (Baraniak and McDevitt, 2012).
