[Nestin(+), Nestin(-)]

approved gene symbol: NES. The human gene has been cloned by Dahlstrand et al (1992). The protein exhibits structural similarities to vimentin, desmin and neuro-filaments and is classified as a type IV neuro-filament (Lendahl et al, 1990). Nestin heterodimerizes with vimentin and desmin (Sjöberg G et al, 1994; Marvin et al, 1998) and the resulting intermediate filaments form the cytoskeleton together with microtubules and microfilaments.

Nestin is a vertebrate intermediate filament protein (Hockfield and McKay,1985) expressed predominantly in stem cells of the central nervous system in the neural tube. Lothian and Lendahl (1997) have shown that a relatively short, evolutionarily conserved region in the second intron of the human ... ... ... ... ... Subscribe to continue reading! ... ...
