These pigmented differentiated cells, referred to also as NHEM [normal human epidermal melanocytes], are found in the basal layer of the epidermis. They have the appearance of dendritic cells, the cytoplasmic extensions of which connect them to other epidermal cells such as keratocytes. The transformed counterparts of melanocytes are melanoma cells.
Melanocytes develop from more undifferentiated unpigmented cells termed melanoblasts, which themselves are derived from migratory neural crest cells in the developing embryo (Bennett, 1993; Hirobe, 1994; Mollaaghababa and Pavan, 2003). Melanoblasts
