[mechanocyte]
This collective term has been introduced by Goldspink and Booth (1992) and refers to various cell types that are activated by mechanical strain involving the cytoskeleton. Examples are osteoblasts, osteocytes, fibroblasts, smooth muscle cells, cardiomyocytes, skeletal muscle cells (Goldspink and Booth, 1992; Goldspink, 1999). It is reasonable to assume, however, that almost all known cell types in one way or other can and do respond to mechanical stimuli. As used by Willmer (1970) the term essentially refers to fibroblasts.
