These cells constitute the parenchymal cells of the heart (as opposed to the stromal cells or connective tissue cells). They are contractile muscle cells (myocytes) and are called also cardiac myocytes, cardiac muscle cells, or myocardiocytes, or cardiocytes or heart muscle cells. Note that the term cardiocytes may be used also in a more general sense referring to other cell types such as fibroblasts found in heart tissues.
