Skeletal muscle cells are very long multinuclear myocytes that contain contractile proteins and perform the mechanical work of muscles. These cells are being referred to also as myotubes or muscle fibers and originate from myoblasts. Myotubes can be differentiated in vitro from satellite cells, which are skeletal muscle stem cells capable of differentiating from a quiescent state to repair damaged skeletal muscle (Gaster et al, 2001).
