The enzyme designated kininase 2 and purified by Dorer et al (1972) and Yang et al (1971) as an angiotensin-converting enzyme removes the C-terminal dipeptide from angiotensin-1 and converts it into its more potent derivative, angiotensin-2. Bradykinin is inactivated by the removal of its C-terminal dipeptide (Dorer et al, 1972, 1974). This dipeptidyl carboxypeptidase is ACE [angiotensin-converting enzyme, angiotensin-1 converting enzyme] and the new designation is CD143.
