symbol: hug. This Drosophila melanogaster gene encodes a peptide classified as one of the pyrokinins. It is being referred to also as Pyrokinin-2. The hugin has been identified by Meng et al (2002) by cross-hybridisation to a human GDNF cDNA (Note: the hugin gene was found by accident under low stringency hybridization conditions using the human GDNF sequence. There is no sequence-based evidence for a functional similarity to the neurotrophic factor).
