one of the three primary germ layers forming from the inner cell mass during the process of gastrulation in the developing animal embryo. The other two cell layers are the ectoderm and the endoderm. Not all animals develop a mesodermal cell layer. Radiata (animals with radial symmetry), for example, only possess only endoderm and ectoderm.
The mesoderm is the middle layer of the developing embryo and lies between the outer ectodermal layer and the inner endodermal layer. The terms mesoblasts or mesoblastic cells usually refer to early undifferentiated cells derived from the mesoderm. Mesodermal cells
