[ependyma, ependymal, ependymal cell]
These cells, called also ependymocytes, are specialized neuroglial cells that form a protective cell layer that lines the brain ventricles (see also: tanycytes) and the spinal cord central canal and separates these from the cerebrospinal fluid (Sarnat, 1998; Del Bigio, 1995). Ependymal cells are cuboidal epithelial cells and constitute a remnant of the embryonic neuroectoderm that once formed the neural tube. The immature precursors of ependymal cells are called ependymoblasts. For a cell type associated with malignant ependymal cells see also: gemistocytes.
