abbr. and approved gene symbol: Gkn3. Mouse gastrokine-3 (see also: gastrokine) has been identified by Menheniott et al (2010) as a secreted (approximately 19 kDa) protein co-expressed with trefoil factor TFF-2 in the distal stomach and discriminates a Griffinia simplicifolia lectin (GS)-II-positive mucus neck cell subpopulation in the proximal stomach. The gene is believed to be non-functional in humans due to a widespread homozygosity for a premature stop codon polymorphism.
Gastrokine-3 overexpression inhibits proliferation in gastric epithelial cell lines, independently of incubation with recombinant human TFF-2 or apoptosis.
