These specialized epithelial cells, called also mucous neck cells, are found in the neck region of tubular mucosal invaginations known as gastric units found in the central (corpus) region of the stomach (Karam and Leblond, 1995). Mucous neck cells are being referred to also as gastric foveolar cells. The cells, which are located between parietal cells, contain many mucous secretory granules. They gradually lose the ability to produce mucus and become chief cells and parietal cells (Karam and Leblond, 1993).
