These cells (see also: chief cells) are epithelial cells found in the gastric epithelium in the central (corpus) region of the stomach. They are serous cells positioned in tubular mucosal invaginations known as gastric units. Chief cells represent one of five lineages of epithelial cells in the stomach (pit cells, parietal cells, enteroendocrine cells, caveolated cells) (Karam and Leblond, 1992).
