abbr. EPCs (a term with multiple meanings). This collective term refers to precursor cells that, during hematopoiesis, develop from CD34(+) cells and in a series of differentiation steps eventually give rise to erythrocytes in response to erythropoietin. As such, the term may comprise BFU-E, CFU-E, normoblasts, and reticulocytes (see also: erythropoiesis) (for overview see: Koury, 2016; Klingmüller, 1997).
