[Burst forming unit erythroid] Term used to describe the earliest known erythroid precursor cells that eventually differentiate into erythrocytes (see also: hematopoiesis, erythroid progenitor cells). BFU-E can be assayed and identified in a colony formation assay by the specific morphology of the cells cells and are referred to also as low proliferative potential colony-forming cells (abbr. LPP-CFC; see: HPP-CFC (high proliferative potential colony-forming cells). BFU-E produce large colonies of erythroid cells that consist of "bursts" of smaller colonies. These colonies appear after 10 to 15 days in culture.
