This term has multiple meanings:
(-1-) The name derives from the observation that these cells contain reticular networks of polyribosomes. As reticulocytes lose their polyribosomes they become mature erythrocytes (see also: erythropoiesis). Reticulocytes represent the last stage of a series of developmental stages in the bone marrow before the cells are being released into blood. Red blood cells released from the bone marrow into the peripheral circulation are considered reticulocytes for about 2 to four days.
