erbA (v-erbA) and erbB (v-erbB) are oncogene products encoded by the acutely transforming avian erythroblastosis virus (AEV). This virus induces lethal erythroleukemia and fibrosarcomas in chicken in vivo and transforms hematopoietic cells (see also: hematopoiesis) and fibroblasts in vitro.
A cellular homolog, termed c-erb or c-erbA, of these genes has been isolated from the genomes of a number of vertebrates. Two distantly related classes of erbA genes exist in humans and mice
