[epithelioid cell]
a kind of modified macrophage with the appearance of epithelial cells (Spector and Willoughby, 1968; Sutton JS and Weiss, 1966; Cronan et al, 2016). These cells belong to the lineage of mononuclear phagocytes and are found predominantly in granulomatous inflammation. The cells show little phagocytic activity. In certain cases these cells can fuse to form multinucleate giant cells. Another term is epithelioid macrophages (Papadimitriou and Spector, 1971).
