[phagocyte, phagocytic]
The termphagocytes' is a general term for cells that perform phagocytosis. These cells ingest microorganisms, cell debris, and entire dead or defective host cells, in particular, blood cells, employing specialised organelles known as phagosomes. These phagocytic cells are instrumental for the removal of dead cells having undergone cell death by necrosis or apoptosis (Liu and Pope, 2004; Wu et al, 2006). Phagocytes may also be important mediators of tissue damage in a variety of conditions (Ricevuti, 1997).
Phagocytes comprise neutrophils, eosinophils, monocytes, and tissue macrophages
