[epicardium-derived cell]
abbr. EPDCs. These cells are found in the epicardium. They originate by epithelial-to-mesenchymal transformation of cells in the epithelial cell sheet covering the heart. Epicardium-derived cells have been shown to be indispensable for the formation of the ventricular compact zone and myocardial maturation (Gittenberger-de Groot et al, 2010; Lie-Venema et al, 2007) and play a major role in enhaancing proliferation, maturation, and alignment of cardiomyocytes (Weeke-Klimp et al, 2010).
Epicardium-derived cells can differentiate into cardiomyocytes, coronary endothelial cells, smooth muscle cells, and interstitial fibroblast lineages
