short for: Eph family receptor interacting proteins (Eph Nomenclature Committee, 1997) The term Ephrins is a collective term for ligands of a large family of tyrosine kinase receptors known as Eph receptors [Erythropoietin-producing hepatoma receptors; Erythropoietin-producing hepatocellular carcinoma receptors] (Drescher, 1997; Tuzi and Gullick, 1994; Himanen and Nikolov, 2003). The name is derived from a hepatocellular carcinoma (hepatome) the cell line that produced erythropoietin, from which the first member of the family (see: EPH) was isolated (Hirai et al, 1987).
