The EPH gene has been cloned by Hirai et al (1987). The approved gene symbol for the EPH gene is EphA1 [Eph receptor A1].
EPH encodes a protein tyrosine kinase expressed in liver, lung, kidney, and testes of rat. Screening of various human cancers shows preferential expression in cells of epithelial origin.
Overexpression of EPH mRNA has been found in a hepatoma and a lung cancer without gene amplification. The EPH locus maps to human chromosome 7q32-q36 (Yoshida et al, 1989; Maru et al, 1988).
Many different tyrosine kinases related to EPH (EPH family) have been isolated and most of them are believed to be putative receptors for growth factors
