[elastokine]
This term has been proposed to describe bioactive peptides, termed also Elastin peptides or elastin-derived peptides, derived by proteolytic cleavage of the extracellular matrix protein elastin. As such, elastokines are examples of matrikines, factors derived from components of the extracellular matrix.
Elastin, approved gene symbol: ELN, is an insoluble macromolecular polymer of the soluble precursor tropoelastin and constitutes the main amorphous component of elastic fibers responsible for the elastic properties of tissues (for overview see: Mithieux and Weiss, 2005).
