abbr. ELH. The hormone is a peptide of 36 amino acids (ISINQDLKAITDMLLTEQIRERQRYLADLRQRLLEKamide) isolated from the sea hare Aplysia californica (Chiu et al, 1979). It has no similarity to other vertebrate neuropeptides. Similar ELH-related genes that form a gene family are found in other members of the genus Aplysia (Nambu JR and Scheller, 1986), and in some instances the sequences of egg-laying hormone are completely identical (Nagle et al, 1988).
This hormone is synthesized and released by neuroendocrine bag cell neurons located in the abdominal ganglion and acts directly on the ovotestis of Aplysia (Rothman et al, 1983).
