In sensu strictu, neuropeptides are small bioactive proteins or peptides that are produced and released by neurons through the regulated secretory route and acting on neural substrates. However, the term is used frequently in a wider sense as these agents may also show bioactivities on other cell types.
As such the term may comprise various cytokines and growth factors, chemokines, as well as classical peptide hormones of the endocrine system, and regulatory peptide factors, for example cerebellins, neurexophilins, and granins, all of which are subject to neurosecretion by neurons
