These cells, also being referred to as bag cells, are neurosecretory cells found in the sea slug Aplysia californica. These cells produce long trains of action potentials (afterdischarge) to release an egg-laying hormone precursor protein that yields multiple bioactive peptides. The majority of bag cell neurons are located within two major abdominal bag cell clusters, but smaller groups of egg-laying hormone-expressing cells are found in specific pleural and cerebral ganglia regions.
