often abbreviated ACD. A term suggested for any kind of cell death that does not occur in a genetically programmed form as in apoptosis (see also: NOCD [naturally occurring cell death]). Accidental cell death caused by severe insults, including physical, chemical, stimuli, is virtually immediate and is insensitive to pharmacologic or genetic interventions of any kind. It has been suggested that the term accidental cell death be used rather than necrosis, which is descriptive of changes secondary to cell death by any mechanism rather than indicating a specific form of cell death (Majno et al, 1995; Trump et al, 1997).
