Tang et al (2009, 2012) have reported that cell death by apoptosis, generally thought to be an irreversible process, may be reversible. This term anastasis (also: reversal of apoptosis) refers to the recovery of cells from early and even late stages of cell death by apoptosis. Using single cell analysis, the authors state, that anastasis allows cells to recover from the overt features of apoptosis, such as mitochondrial fragmentation, chromatin condensation, DNA damage, plasma membrane blebbing, cell surface exposure of phosphatidylserine, release of mitochondrial cytochrome C, caspase
