[bacteriocyte]
this term pertains to symbiont-housing specialized cells of mesodermal origin found in various insect species. These cells form an organ, termed the bacteriome that contains obligate bacterial symbionts and provide a local environment that protects these symbionts against immune responses. Obligate endosymbionts provide essential nutrients to the hosts, and are critical for survival, reproduction and evolution of the insects. In most insects, symbiotic microorganisms are transferred from mother to offspring transovarially within female germ cells (for overview see: Login and Heddi, 2013; Szklarzewicz and Michalik, 2017).
