a term pertaining to one of several mechanisms causing cell death by apoptosis and involving a death receptor and its cognate ligand. Essentially this involves an autocrine mechanism in which cells express a death receptor and its cognate ligand acting on the producer cell. It is observed, for example in T-cells expressing and secreting FAS antigen and the FAS ligand, binding of which to its receptor triggers cell death.
This mechanism is of particular relevance for tumor cells. Some tumor cell types may express the death receptor and its ligand and yet remain resistant to apoptosis, possibly by expressing other
