The FAS antigen is a cysteine-rich transmembrane protein of 335 amino acids with significant similarity to the members of the TNF /NGF receptor superfamily. Oehm et al (1992) have shown that this antigen is identical with the APO-1 cell surface antigen, cross-linking of which causes cell death by apoptosis.
