Allatostatins are a family of related insect regulatory neuropeptides / neurohormones produced by neurosecretory cells of the brain (Woodhead et al, 1989). They are produced also by endocrine cells of the gut (Reichwald et al, 1994). Allatostatins act on two endocrine organs near the insect brain termed the corpora allata (hence the name) and block the biosynthesis of juvenile hormone, which regulates insect metamorphosis, reproduction, food intake, growth, and development (Stay et al, 1996; Stay and Tobe, 2007). Functions of allatostatins as regulatory peptides are suggested by their production in hemocytes (Skinner et al, 1997).
