The term neurosecretory cells is a rather general term and can be applied to different types of neurons and endocrine cells, based on the common molecular properties of their secretory programme (nature of secreted factors such as neurotransmitters, hormones, and other factors as well as the nature of the specialized organelles employed for storage such as synaptic-like vesicles and dense granules and exocytosis mechanisms) (Malosio et al, 1999).
