This alloantigen has been described by van Loghem (1959) in a patient with the clinical picture of post-transfusion purpura. The two alleles, called Zw(a) and Zw(b), are the result of a single amino acid polymorphisms in the platelet protein GP3A (CD61) (Newman et al, 1989). This antigen is the same as PL(A1). In the nomenclature for platelet antigens the designation for this alloantigen is HPA-1 [human platelet antigen-1].
