This alloantigen has been described by Shulman et al (1961) who observed it in association with post-transfusion purpura. This alloantigen is of clinical importance as it accounts for a majority of reported cases of post-transfusion purpura and Neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenic purpura.
Kieffer et al (1984) have shown that this antigen is identical with the platelet glycoprotein GP3A. Newman et al (1989) have reported that the two alles of this alloantigen, PL(A1) and PL(A2) differ from each other by a leucine-33/proline-33 amino acid polymorphism. Bowditch et al (1992) have reported that the alloantigenic epitop of GP3A is located in the terminal 66 residues within a small unglycosylated fragment of the protein containing the polymorphisms resposible for the alloantigen phenotype.
