[ten-cysteine protein 1] The gene encoding this protein has been cloned by Chumakov et al (2004), following a search for proteins that are not expressed in neutrophils and macrophages of knock-out mice lacking expression of transcription factor C/EBP-epsilon (Kubota et al, 2000). The protein is related to resistin and related proteins (RELM-alpha, RELM-beta) and is identical with RELM-gamma.

Chumakov et al (2004) have reported that XCP1 directly interacts with human neutrophil defensin-alpha-1 and plays a role in myeloid cell chemotaxis.
