General term used to describe the directed cell locomotion in concentration gradients of soluble extracellular agents. Substances that induce a chemotactic response (CTF = chemotactic factors) are known also under the general name of Cytotaxin, Chemotaxin, or Chemoattractants. For other mechanisms of cell migration not relying on gradients of factors see also: durotaxis, plithotaxis.
