[acronym derived from 'resistance to insulin'; abbr. RSTN; approved gene symbol RETN; also RETN1] This protein of 12.5 kDa (90 amino acids) is known also as ADSF [adipose tissue-specific secretory factor; adipocyte-secreted factor] (Kim et al, 2001) or FIZZ-3 [found in inflammatory zone-3] (Holcomb et al, 2000). The protein has been identified independently as XCP4 [ten-cysteine protein 4]. The protein is rich in serine and cysteine residues with a unique cysteine repeat motif of CX(12)CX(8)CXCX(3)CX(10)CXCXCX(9)CC. The gene appears to be expressed specifically in murine
