WDR neurons

[wide dynamic range neurons] WDR neurons or WDR cells, identified first by Mendell (1966), are a subset of neurons in the spinal dorsal horn and brain stem that are defined functionally as multireceptive or multisensory, i.e. they respond to innocuous and noxious stimuli. These cells show small responses to innocuous pressure to deep tissue and stronger and graded responses to noxious stimulation, receiving a convergent input from both sensitive mechanoreceptors and from nociceptors.
