[WDR neuron]
[wide dynamic range neurons] WDR neurons or WDR cells, identified first by Mendell (1966), are a class of neurons in the spinal dorsal horn and brain stem that are defined functionally as multireceptive or multisensory, i.e., they respond to innocuous and noxious stimuli. These cells show small responses to innocuous pressure to deep tissue and stronger and graded responses to noxious stimulation, receiving a convergent input from both sensitive mechanoreceptors and from nociceptors.
Unlike most other neurons that increase their firing rate in response to increasing stimulus intensity but do not alter the magnitude of action potentials, WDR neurons respond with increased action potentials, a phenomenon termed
