Dorsal, identified by Steward (1987), is encoded by the Drosophila melanogaster gene CG6667. It is one of three NF-kappa-B family members found in Drosophila (the others being Dif [Dorsal-related immunity factor] and Relish).
Dorsal, has been shown to play a central function in dorso-ventral axis formation in the embryo (Govind, 1999), but also regulates innate immune responses. Dorsal is dispensable in adults but can substitute for Dif [Dorsal-related immunity factor] in controlling the expression of the antimicrobial peptide Drosomycin in mutant larvae lacking expression of Dif.
