often: nociceptor neurons; also: nociceptor cells. Nociceptors are specialized sensory neurons defined operationally as cells that sense, and respond to, potentially harmful stimuli like heat, mechanical pressure or chemicals and mediate pain sensation. Various types of nociceptors corresponding to mechanical, chemical or thermal stimuli lead to the activation of receptors and further neuronal processing produces the sensation of pain (for overview see: Khan et al, 2019; Viana, 2018). These cells engage in bidirectional communication with various cells types of the immune system mediating inflammation (for overview see: Pinho-Ribeiro et al, 2017; see also: Baral et al, 2018; Chen et al, 2019)
