[vasoactive intestinal peptide; vasoactive intestinal polypeptide] VIP is a peptide of 28 amino acids (HSDAVFTDNYTRLRKQMAVKKYLNSILNamide) that belongs to the glucagon and secretin family of neuropeptides. It is derived from a precursor protein of 170 amino acids by proteolytic cleavage. It is found in large amounts in the central and peripheral nervous system. VIP is synthesized and secreted by the hypothalamus and anterior pituitary and participates in the regulation of pituitary functions, stimulating, among other things, the release of Prolactin, Growth hormone, ACTH (see also: POMC, proopiomelanocortin), and Vasopressin
