Prolactin, known also as lactogenic hormone, lactotropin, lactotropic hormone, mammotropin, mammotropic hormone, luteotropic hormone (LTH), or luteotropin is a neuroendocrine pituitary hormone of 23 kDa (23 kDa PRL, 23 kDa Prolactin; Shome and Parlow, 1977). The gene has been cloned and characterized by Cooke et al (1981) and Truong et al (1984). The term Prl1a1 [prolactin family 1 subfamily A member 1] has been proposed by Soares et al (2007).
