This secreted protein has been identifed as a dorsalizing factor of the neural tube in Xenopus laevis (Tsuda et al, 2002). The protein belongs to a larger protein family known as Olfactomedins, which comprises a diverse family of secreted glycoproteins implicated in development of the nervous system (noelins, tiarin, pancortins, gliomedin). It is known also as OLFM4 [Olfactomedin-4].
Overexpression of tiarin in the embryo causes expansion of dorsal neural markers and suppression of ventral markers. In the eye-forming field, tiarin overexpression induces retinal markers and represses optic stalk markers. Tiarin directly dorsalizes neural tissues in the absence of mesodermal
