This protein is encoded by the SOST gene, which is responsible for a progressive sclerosing bone dysplasia (Sclerosteosis) (Balemans et al, 2001; Brunkow et al, 2001). The SOST gene encodes a protein that shares similarity with a class of factors characterized by the presence of a cystine knot, including DAN, cerberus, Gremlin, prdc, and caronte (Brunkow et al, 2001).
