[dysplastic]
Under conditions of dysregulated cell division (compare also: hyperplasia), tissues lose some of their normal ordered appearance and the cells in such tissues, called dysplastic cells, have lost some of their morphological (and also functional) characteristics (see also: atypical cells, hyperplasia). Differentiated cells in dysplastic tissues show greater variability than observed in healthy tissues and may display, among other things cellular enlargement and various degrees of nuclear pleomorphism or multinucleation. In comparison to healthy tissues, both dysplastic tissues and dysplastic cells look abnormal under a microscope. Such tissues may contain also increased numbers of immature cells.
