Caronte

The gene encoding Caronte has been identified by Rodriguez Esteban et al (1999) in a search for genes involved in embryonic left-right asymmetry determination. Caronte is expressed specifically in the left lateral plate mesoderm of chicken. Caronte is a secreted protein related to Cerberus and Dan.

Caronte has been shown to mediate the induction of left-specific genes in the lateral plate mesoderm under the control of Sonic hedgehog and bone morphogenetic proteins (Rodriguez Esteban et al, 1999; Piedra and Ros, 2002; Yokouchi et al, 1999).
