Ectodin is a secreted inhibitor of bone morphogenetic proteins identified by Laurikkala et al (2003). Mouse and human Ectodin share 95 % amino acid identity. Ectodin is most homologous (approximately 37 % amino acid identity) to sclerostin, another secreted BMP antagonist. The protein is being referred to also as SOSTDC1 [sclerostin domain-containing protein-1] (approved gene symbol) and has been identified independently as USAG-1 [uterine sensitization-associated gene-1] and Wise [Wnt modulator in surface ectoderm].
